 The key issue with computer recycling is one associated with any form of engineering. In effect, the issue of recycling any form of electronics should be seen from the point of view of engineering. The fabrication of electronic equipment stems from human ingenuity- the ability to manipulate materials. However, the electronics industry did not develop until the inception of the industrial revolution (i.e. mass production), the electron microscope and the use of robotics. These three processes are still in use today, in the mass production of electronic equipment. Small items comprising circuit boards, liquid crystal displays and now the use of organic LED displays all require the use of modern manufacturing techniques, such as robotics and the electron microscope. However, the final assembly process requires a technique developed by the VIctorians - that of manufacturing. Mass production, similar to that conceived by Henry Ford is now employed throughout the world in the final assembly of the components contained every piece of electronic equipment throughout the world.

So why is this so important to consider in the recycling of computer/ electronic equipment? It’s a concept known as reverse engineering. This process, in which the mass de-production of equipment allows for an extremely high raw resource extraction, allows for efficient disassembly of obsolete or faulty equipment. In comparison to mechanical processing, where all equipment is simply shredded and then separated, the manual processing in the early stage of recycling allows for the separation of all major constituent materials, which can then be processed by machine. This process has the added advantage of requiring far less energy in the recycling process. The procedure bypasses a further issue in that it prevents cross-contamination of non-hazardous materials with hazardous compounds. Manual separation ensures that hazardous lead/ acid batteries can be recovered, without contaminating the metal casing, copper transformer or internal circuit board, each of which are clean, non-hazardous components. The same can be said for flat bed scanners, cathode ray tube monitors, laptops, televisions, fridges, freezers and flat screen televisions, each of which contain both hazardous and non-hazardous components.
